The Knowles Binder Collection documents the history of Crosswicks village and environs from the 17th century to c. 2005 by street and the structures, dwellings, and buildings on those streets. Each of the 35 binders typically records one street or road or one side thereof, with overlap at intersections. They include copies of historic and contemporary photographs, the latter largely taken by Mr. Knowles; articles, obituaries, real estate notices clipped from local and regional newspapers; articles on pre-electric village practices applicable to Crosswicks; historical notes or articles by Mr. Knowles and others on the structures and their inhabitants; maps; deeds and other legal documents; newsletters, pamphlets, programs, and booklets; invoices and receipts; schematics or blueprints; postcards and notecards; advertising flyers and commercial memorabilia; correspondence; and Internet printouts. Album 6 documents the mills, ice plant, dams, and bridges of Crosswicks Creek in 70 polyprolyene binder sleeves. These include 1. typed and handwritten histories of the Lambert and Brick mills, Sanitary Ice Company and employees, 1673-1988; 2. Advertisements for Eagle Mills of Crosswicks (no date), public sale of Brick Milling Company (1974); 3. Invoices to Chesterfield Township for bridge lamplighting (1907, 1913) and electric streetlights (1925); 4. Correspondence and accounts related to Charles W. Brick Ice, Flour and Feed Co. and Sanitary Ice and Coal Co.; 5. Copies of historic photos of mill complex; 6. Knowles' photos of the complex with dam, its decline, and demolition in 1988, as well as some components; 7. Newspaper clippings on death by drowning of Edward L. Traks in 1983; 8. 1834 survey map of .21 acres on Crosswicks Creek in Township of Nottingham, Burlington County, NJ; 9. Newspaper clippings on Crosswicks dams, 1981-86; 10. Photocopies of newspaper clippings on revolutionary history and reconstruction of Crosswicks bridge, 1907-c. 1933; 11. Typescript of ordinance to vacate old road and lay out new road approach to new bridge, and of deed to related land, 1907; 12. Minutes, handwritten, of 3 township meetings related to bridge, March-May 1907; 13. Histories of lattice-truss covered bridge and its designer, Ithiel Town; 14. First Day Cover of Crosswicks Village Festival, September 27, 1997, with newspaper article; 15. Thomas Lethbridge's poem, "Old Crosswicks Bridge," 1908; 16. Historic photos of covered bridge and Alfred Newbold's boathouse; 17. Newspaper clippings of truck-auto accident on Crosswicks Creek bridge involving William Griner, 1962; 18. Knowles' photos of Crosswicks Creek bridge including underside and stone pilings for earlier covered bridge, c. 1965; 19. General histories from magazines or other publications that explain the history or process of milling, ice harvesting, hydro or water power, and covered bridges were not digitally scanned with the Hovercam. These include an offprint of Edward Uehling's "Water over the Dam," a referenced two-part article with addenda from the Allis-Chalmers Electrical Review, 3rd and 4th Quarters 1954. |
