Mr. Knowles made photocopies from microfilm or paper clippings of articles in the Allentown Messenger newspaper. All but one of these date from 1903-5, when Albert Robinson, principal and "professor" at Allentown's Borough or High School, published a six-part series, "Voices from ye Olden Time." He based these articles on an 18th-century account book kept by Thomas Folkes/Foulke (III) of Crosswicks that he had recently purchased. Folkes, a saddler and farmer by trade, recorded the costs of goods and his participation in the local economy as a buyer of goods and services and employer of labor. He also lists recipes and cures. Six articles followed: on the Crosswicks Friends' Meeting House; U.S. Supreme Court justice Henry B. Brown's wedding to Josephine Bunting Tyler of Crosswicks; Wrightsville's Chesterfield Friends' connections; abolitionist John Woolman; the Hendrickson family of Monmouth County; and the businesses and industries of Yardville, New Jersey. C. Ridgway Ellis contributed a final article in 1921 on Ellisdale's hotel; notes of social life in Chesterfield adjoin it.
